Our friend, and very talented photographer, Jen Edney made the trip down the coast from San Francisco to San Diego with the crew aboard Maserati, and sent us these beautiful, life-capturing shots. Maserati spent several months in the SF Bay after completing the record run from New York to San Francisco via Cape Horn, with a blistering time of 47 days, two hours and 33 minutes; besting the previous record by an incredible 10 days!
The 13,000 trip from NY to SF via way of Cape Horn is a historic commercial shipping route associated with the California Gold Rush. Most notably the historic record run set in 1854 by the clipper ship White Cloud stood for 130 years! Maserati hopes to again show their record setting form during this year’s Transpac, and though Jen won’t be sailing with them to Hawaii, she will be covering their every move at the start, and finish, and remotely during the race.
On the trip down the coast, Jen not only spent the time on board getting to know the crew, and snapping stunning pics, she also, “...helped with watches, did some trimming and driving, and if they needed another grinder I would jump in.” Jen has over 40,000 miles of cruising experience, which is quite different from the rigorous sailing aboard a go-fast carbon beauty like Maserati, She explains that, This was my first time sailing on a VO70, so it was a different experience. It took some getting used to. Maserati is different than any boat than I’ve ever been on.”
Jen’s adventure with Maserati doesn’t end when Skipper Giovanni Soldini and the crew aboard Maserati cross the finish line off of Diamond Head, she plans to hop on board for more high performance sailing experience. She told us that, "After the Transpac, I'll be on the delivery crew to sail her from Hawaii to Hong Kong to get some more offshore experience. My passion is storytelling and being right in the middle of the action so I'm looking forward to documenting life offshore."
