Tahiti 2012 Announcement

Transpac is hearing from sailors with a yen to race to Tahiti, and they ask—

Will there be another race like 2008?

The answer is yes.

Transpac Yacht Club exists to run races. Show us a fleet, and we'll give you a race.

In 2008 we had a fleet of four boats, and Doug Baker's Magnitude 80 smashed the course record with a run of 11 days, 10 hours, 13 minutes, 18 seconds. There's a target to shoot for.  Chris Welsh and crew on the venerable Ragtime took overall Corrected Time honors with their run of 14 days, 16 hours, 24 minutes, and 13 seconds.  Three of the four boats entered beat the old record established by Kathmandu in 1994.

Preliminary entry forms for a race in 2012, Los Angeles to Tahiti, are available now.  If there are sufficient entries, we anticipate a start somewhere between mid May and mid June, to tie into another sailing event in Tahiti upon arrival.

Update: There is a suggestion that we run a parallel race from Honolulu to Tahiti timed for arrival in Papeete at the same time as the arrivals from Los Angeles. If you are interested in a start from Hawaii to join the fleet in Tahiti, please let us know also.

The two events being considered to connect with in Tahiti are the Tahiti Pearl Regatta beginning on 17 May 2012, or the Tahiti Moorea Sailing Rendezvous beginning 15 June 2012.

If a 2012 Tahiti Race sounds good, we want to hear from you. Questions can be directed to Transpac Tahiti 2012 below.
